The format is now well-bedded-in: three questions, a single combined limit of 4,000 characters (including spaces) shared across all three, and a minimum of 350 characters per answer. There\u2019s no opening or closing essay to write \u2014 you answer the questions directly.<\/p><p>Most students still treat the new format as if it were three short essays. It isn\u2019t. It\u2019s a structured form, and the questions reward different things: question 1 wants intellectual specificity, question 2 wants concrete academic preparation, question 3 wants connection between activity and skill. A particular book, lecture, problem, experiment, conversation, or moment that genuinely changed how you thought about the subject. Five mistakes came up repeatedly.<\/p><h3>Mistake 1: writing three short essays instead of three answers<\/h3><p>Question 1 is not \u201ctell me a story about why you love this subject.\u201d It\u2019s \u201cwhy do you want to study this course?\u201d \u2014 answered specifically. The new format rewards a direct, structured response.<\/p><h3>Mistake 2: padding to fill space<\/h3><p>The 4,000-character limit is a ceiling, not a target. Some answers are strongest well short of it. Forcing a section longer with adjectives and connectives makes it worse, not better. Use the space you need and stop.<\/p><h3>Mistake 3: AI-edited statements<\/h3><p>Tutors at three universities told us they could spot AI-edited statements consistently. The marker is uniformity of voice across the three answers, combined with phrases like &#8220;multifaceted,&#8221; &#8220;robust,&#8221; &#8220;underscores,&#8221; and the over-use of em-dashes. Your imperfect voice is more compelling than a polished AI rewrite.<\/p><h3>Mistake 4: repeating the same point across questions<\/h3><p>If your EPQ already appears in question 2, don\u2019t lead question 3 with it. The three questions test different things \u2014 and because they\u2019re read as one statement, repetition is obvious. Use the space.<\/p><h3>Mistake 5: missing the contextual offer prompt<\/h3><p>UCAS prompts applicants for contextual information separately \u2014 free school meals, care experience, refugee status, and so on. Many applicants \u2014 particularly first-generation students \u2014 skip this section out of embarrassment or oversight. Don\u2019t.
