Many UK universities offer <strong>travel bursaries<\/strong> specifically to help prospective students from lower-income backgrounds attend open days. You can join from anywhere and ask questions in chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recorded subject talks<\/strong> \u2014 same content the in-person attendees get, available to watch in your own time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Online chat with student ambassadors<\/strong> \u2014 most universities run a chat service where you can message current students directly. Most will say yes. Recent alumni at the universities you&#8217;re targeting are gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The questions that work best:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What surprised you about the course in your first term?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What&#8217;s the most frustrating thing about studying here?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where do most second-year students live, and how much do they pay?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you could redo your university decision, would you pick the same place?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What did you wish you&#8217;d known before accepting your offer?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those questions get honest answers. &#8220;Do you like the uni?&#8221; gets you a sales pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Doing serious online research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you can&#8217;t visit, you compensate with much more thorough research. It&#8217;s a less polished version of the open day, but for the questions that matter most (atmosphere, fit), it can be just as informative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you&#8217;ll miss without a visit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be honest about the limits of virtual research:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The gut feel.<\/strong> Whether you can imagine yourself living there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The scale.<\/strong> How walkable the campus is. Save up, use a travel bursary, combine with a family visit, attend an offer holder day instead.
